Urgent Appeal update: Anwar Ibrahim Freed on Police Bail: After Detained Overnight by Police

People Justice Party (PKR) *de facto* leader Anwar Ibrahim was released on police bail this morning about 10am, after being detained overnight at Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters. However, Anwar has to report back to the police in a month’s time on 18 August 2008.

Anwar was taken to Kuala Lumpur Police Headquarters yesterday and underwent a marathon six-hour questioning session on the sodomy allegation against him. After that, he was taken to hospital for a medical examination.

In a press conference at his house hours after he was free, Anwar claimed that he was stripped naked for tests when he was brought to the hospital and was examined including his private parts. The doctors also tried to get a sample of his blood for DNA test. Anwar, however, refused to give his blood sample upon advice from his lawyers and DNA experts.

Despite his release, we question the necessity for the arrest and the overnight detention of Anwar. The lack of professionalism, disregard for the rule of law and blatant abuse of powers by the police in his arrest and detention must be condemned.

SUARAM would like thank all who had sent protest letters to the relevant agencies and authorities. We would appreciate your continued support towards the struggle for justice and human rights
