Title : Islamic Law Reform in the light of Maqasid-e-Sharia (principles of Shariah)*
Speaker : Prof. D. Malik Muhammad M. al Awan, Chairman of the Furqan Islamic Finance Research LLC, DIFC Dubai and the President of Global Studies Institute, USA.*

We are honoured to have with us Prof. D. Malik Muhammad M. al Awan, whose presentation will focus on the current trends and recent success of reforms in the Islamic financial law sector by the application of the principles of Shariah or the maqasid-e-shariah.

It may be interesting for us to find out how Muslim scholars applied the principles of Shariah in deriving new rulings to make it viable and competitive in the modern financial and banking world. Prof Al-Awan will focus on the experience of selected Muslim countries from the *MENA***region as case studies.We hope to benefit from the exercise and hope to explore on how the approach and principles of Shariah can be applied to reform the Muslim Family law and deal with new knowledge and questions posed by women in their demand for justice and equality.

Brief Biodata*
* PROF. DR. MUHAMMAD MAHMUD Al AWAN*
A multi- disciplinary scholar of Islamic jurisprudence, Dr. Al Awan has been engaged in Islamic Finance for the last thirty years. He is a practicing attorney of International Law with a broad specialization in Islamic Contract Law and Commercial Procedure. He is a recognized trainer of Sharia scholars and serves on the governing boards of a number of Islamic organizations in Asia and North America . He has been Dean of the Faculty & Chief Academic Officer at INCEIF, a unit of Central Bank of Malaysia ,where he previously served as Distinguished Professor of Sharia & Chairman of theGlobal Forum on Islamic Finance. He has built the East-West Co-existence Framework for Islamic Finance involving Nobel Laureates, Heads of State, Members of Royalty, and Industry Leaders. He has been a Professor of Financeat top American universities and is a Professor Emeritus at Pakistan ’s National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST). He has been an Academic Dean and Provost at Global Studies Institute in Massachusetts for over ten years.

Professor Awan completed his academic training in the Quran, Hadith, and the history of the Caliphate under the guidance of top Islamic scholars of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia during the 1950s and the Sixties. He majored in Classical Arabic Literature and Research Methodology for his 1970 B.A. from Punjab University before receiving his Masters in Comparative Economic Systems and Development Finance in 1972. He completed his L.L.B. in Islamic Jurisprudence and Contract Law at Punjab University before being awarded an L.L.M. degree in Comparative American Law from Boston University Law School in Boston , Massachusetts .
He started his professional career as a Research Fellow in Monetary Economics at Clark University in 1973 where he was awarded a Ph.D. in 1976. His first papers in Islamic Finance were published in the United States in the 1970s. His highly acclaimed book on Foreign Capital & Development Process was published by University Press of America, Washington , D.C. in 1977. He served as Presidential Adviser to Government of Pakistan, Ministry of Production, in 1978 and served as Visiting Professor at Pakistan Institute of Management.

Dr. Awan is a recognized authority in Technology Management and Economics of Innovation with numerous publications over the last thirty years. He has been a founder of a number of high technology companies listed on NASDAQ and
other stock exchanges. He has served as Treasurer and Chief Financial Officer at several financial institutions. He was elected President and Chairman of the Board of Governors of Western Massachusetts International Trade Association in 1992. Because of his long standing contributions to the telecom industry, he was elected as President of New England Fiber Optic Council in 2004. More recently, he has been President and Chief Executive of Regional Technology Corporation, an organization devoted to regional economic development. He has served as Chairman of the Board from 1998 to 2002 at Technical Communication Corporation, a NASDAQ Company involved in secure communications.

Direction to SIS office: From the Federal Highway (from KL), go to Jln Gasing (where the EPF/KWSP building is). About 2 km into Jalan Gasing, you’ll meet the first traffic light. Pls go straight and about 500m after the traffic light, you’ll see a big Buddhist temple on your left and a row of shop lots on your right where the Lotus Restaurant is situated (just after the Kayla Cosmetic on your left). Then, pls follow the sign Jln Tinggi 6/12, and turn left at the first junction i.e 6/10 and SIS office is the first house from the junction with green gates.
