The Steering Committee to Free the Judiciary welcomes the completion of the report by Royal Commission into the scandalous judge-fixing video clip (V.K.Lingam video clip) and the submission of the report to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong.
The Committee anticipates the public release of the report by the government as they had made public the report by the previous Royal Commission (Royal Commission to Enhance the Management and Operations of the Police Force) in 2005.
“The immediate release of the report is a step to restore public confidence and demonstrate the seriousness of the government in its recently-announced efforts to reform the judiciary,” said SUARAM coordinator Moon Hui, the secretary for the Steering Committee.
Further, the report of the Royal Commission should be released in its entirety without hiding any facts. No part of the report should be kept away from the public.
The Steering Committee also urges the government to have more engagements with civil society organisations to discuss the implementation of the recommendations by the Commission and the planning for judiciary reform.
According to the chairperson of the Commission, Haidar Mohamed Noor, the Commission made four recommendations in its 186-page report which consists of four volumes. The report was submitted by members of the Commission to the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong at Istana Negara pm 9 May 2008.
The Steering Committee would also like to take this opportunity to extend our appreciation for the hard work of the Commissioners, the secretariat of the Commission and as well as all the parties involved in the inquiry, especially those who have contributed in providing evidences and submissions to the Commission.
