Greetings from the Centre for Independent Journalism, Malaysia (CIJ)! As mentioned above, Centre for Independent Journalism is organizing a Radio Production Competition II to get more people involved in the radio project and to raise awareness on community media and the selected issues – women’s rights. So, we would like to invite you to participate in this competition. The theme for this year is ” Documenting Gender Violence.”
The competition is open to women from community groups, students and young people who are interested to document women’s rights in an audio format. The competition will run from April until the end of June, during which groups must also attend radio production training under CIJ. This is to enable the groups to familiarize themselves with the equipment and the programming formats. Below is a detail of the competition.
The competition is divided into two categories:
1.Women in communities
2.Young people
Competition Rules
1.Each group can submit up to two audio programmes.
2.Each group should be represented between 3 and 5 people
3.The duration of the audio files should be between 10 and 15 minutes
4.Participants are free to choose their own language for the audio production but they must submit a one-page summary in Bahasa Malaysia or English.
5.Deadline for submission is 27 June 2008
6.Participants MUST attend the basic radio production training to be organized by CIJ.
7. Results and prize giving ceremony will announce later
8.Judges’ decision is final.
Participation fees
Each group is required to pay a small fee of RM10 together with their participation form. Due consideration will be given for waivers upon request. Forms and the fees must be sent in to CIJ by 21st April 2008.
Content rules
The content should be geared towards the promotion of women’s rights. The following must be observed:
No hate speech
No foul language
Audio file format
Participants have the option to produce their content in any of the
formats below:
Documentary
Interview
Feature
Drama
Discussion
Satire
Proposal idea
Participants are encouraged to submit their ideas to CIJ to ensure they meet the theme and rules. Prepare in an A4 sheet the title, the group members, format, the duration, language, and a summary of the programme. These must be provided by 21st April 2008.
Judging criteria
The submissions will be judged based on the following criteria:
1. Relevance to the theme (35%)
2. Sound quality including clarity, good use of music and supporting sound (35%)
3. Creativity (20%)
4. Initiative and effort (10%)
Prizes
The first prize for both categories will be an equipment set that includes a digital recorder, a headphone set and the relevant cables. The second and third prizes will be in the form of hampers. All participants will receive certificates.
Judges will make a decision on the winners for the two categories and these will be announced during the Community Audio Fest. Selected audio programmes will be broadcast during the fest and on the spot interviews will be conducted at the fest grounds.
