Date: February 19,2008
Two Kachin women were arrested by RELA, so called people volunteer corps, in Kotaraya, the central part of Kuala Lumpur city, on February 17, 2008 while they were waiting for a bus to go back to their premises. Both of them have been currently detained along with their daughters in Semenyih detention camp.
Mrs. Kai Than (43 years old), who has been recognized by United Nations High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR) as a refugee along with four years old daughter with Polio, and Mrs. Htu Mai (45 years old), who has one and a half years old daughter, arrived in Malaysia without husband in early of 2007.
Even though Malaysia is a signatory to the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) and the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the women and child have been continuously arrested and detained in the detention camp in the country.
Currently, there is no further information regarding the situation of two Kachin women and the two babies.
