GMI CANDLELIGHT VIGIL
Dataran Merdeka

We, the organizers of the candlelight vigil in solidarity with ISA detainees planned for Saturday 22 December at Dataran Merdeka, hereby announce that the programme is postponed until early next year, in response to the warning issued by the police this afternoon, so that a police permit can be applied for.

We would like to point out that this programme, like many others before it, is an entirely peaceful one which is in no way a threat to public order let alone national security. It has rather been the actions and deliberate provocation by the police which have caused such gatherings to end in chaos.

In keeping with the constitutional right to peaceful assembly, GMI is firm in its intention to hold this programme, which is now scheduled for 5 January 2008 (Saturday) from 8 - 9 pm, at Dataran Merdeka.
