Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA (GMI) was informed by the family members of the Mohd Noor Bin Abu Bakar that he had been released from ISA on 11th October 2007, two days before Hari Raya. Mohd Noor was arrested on 29 August 2007 and was kept under police custody for more than a month. Currently he is under restricted residence Act 1933 (RRA) for two years.
Mohd Noor Bin Abu Bakar was in Teluk Intan, Perak at 11 am on 29th August. Aged 33 and is alleged to be a Jemaah Islamiyaah (JI) member, Mohd Noor bin Abu Bakar is a teacher who is also a very active member in GERAKAN, a component party of Barisan Nasional.
GMI deemed that the consistent and persistent campaign such as sending out urgent appeals and protest letters to the Prime Minister and the Government by the people has contributed to this release.
GMI strongly condemn the use of the draconian ISA in making the arrest as any form of detention without trial is in violation of basic human rights and blatantly circumvents the rule of law.
Prior to the release of these detainees, GMI had organized a protest in front of the Masjid Jamek, Kuala Lumpur on 5th October 2007, demanding the government to release all the ISA detainees. The release of Mohd Noor is proof that positive results can be obtained against the impregnable ISA with continuous, consolidated, multi-prong, creative and consistent efforts.
Therefore, GMI urge the Government to:
1. Release all ISA detainees immediately or prosecute them in an open court.
2. Adopt the recommendation of SUHAKAM to abolish the ISA
3. Close down the Kamunting Detention Camp, in congruent with PM’s urge to close down Guantanamo Camp on the same principle of detention without trial as a violation of human rights
GMI urge the people, ISA detainees’ family members and GMI coalition members consisting of 83 organizations from multiple backgrounds to continue the struggle to demand the release of all ISA detainees and support fully the efforts to abolish ISA.
Release all ISA detainees!!
Abolish the ISA!!!
Close Down Kamunting Detention Camp!!!
Yours sincerely,
Nalini.E
Secretariat GMI
