I symphatise with the plight of many poor Indians. But going after the British Govt. is quite laughable, at least from the layman’s point of view. Nevertheless, I and many friends wish you all luck.
You mentioned Umno controlled Malaysian Govt..Much I dont like Umno (which stood for YOU MUST NOT OBJECT), I think much responsibility for the plight should be directed to MIC (in 1957, MIC stood for MAY I COME-IN?). MIC MPs are represented in Parliament, and Cabinet). If they have not done their job, then why let them off?

  3. 3 tirath Nov 1st, 2007 at 5:21 pm

“I think much responsibility for the plight should be directed to MIC”

I think it is counter productive to hope for anything from MIC. Even if there are individuals/groups within MIC that do have the best interest of the Malaysian Indian community at heart, they are, sadly, a marginal entity with no actual influence or power. For a political party (especially BN components) power comes from seats – e.g. this is why for PPP is in such a sad state today, and struggling for it’s existence.

MIC may *appear* to have seats (and therefore power), but in reality it has no power. Wherever MIC has a parliamentary/DUN seat, it is secured through UMNO. This is because there are very few seats (or is there even 1 seat?) that have an Indian majority population. Most of the time it is Malay majority, with a sizable Indian minority. So the Indian vote is cancelled out by the Malay vote.

So if the MIC candidate wants to win, he has to rely on the local UMNO support. Therefore, although officially MIC “wins” the seat, in reality the seat (and therefore the MIC MP) is controlled by UMNO.

That’s not to say Indian voters have no power – in truth, whenever the UMNO base is weak, an Indian swing can produce an opposition victory (and a stern wakup call to BN). The challenge is for Indian voters to take advantage of these opportunities when they arise. Such opportunity was there in 1999. The next time such an opportunity comes, we better be ready.

I am very much simpathy with you and the Malaysian Indians. Why is that only Indians are poor although they have been in this country for more than 100 years. The chinese also came to this country for a living. But they have work and become a force in Economy, Education all the fields in Malaysia. They have become powerful economically, also in other fields. We Indians always want the best but everything must be provided by other parties without much effort. Always dependent on MIC ( which is more for its cronies’ betterment only) our NGOs for their financial gain through Social activities.(Always interested in degrading others and gain popularity ). WE MUST WORK FOR OUR BETTERMENT. IF EVERY INDIVIDU UNDERSTAND HIS RESPONSIBILITY OUR SOCIETY WILL PROGRESS IN 2020.

I think more indians are beginning to know about hindraf. I got to know about it just yesterday. The core issue raised by Hindraf have potential to gain momentum . Nothing will come easy – or without some form of struggle. Whatever the outcome of the suit against the british government I think it has got plenty of value to build awareness on the issues and to make clear that there are more ways than one to get attention to these issues.

  6. 6 Chitra Nov 13th, 2007 at 12:25 pm

Well, first of all we must realise that the suit was not to win but to get the world’s eyes on the plight of the Malaysian Indian. And with that, we can hope to embarass the Malaysian Government (if they have any shame!)to rethink this whole racially-political situation and administration.

Otherwise, it’s the first baby-step in a long journey for our rights. It has served as a wake-up call for many Indians!

As for Indians expecting to be spoon-fed or degrading our own efforts or not working to uplift ourselves, it’s true but the writer has forgotten the majority of Indians that have had only themselves and their family to support and uplift them. It does take all kinds of Indians to make the world go around!

Our political system is flawed. We are the only nation with a racially-aligned political party. What good can come out of that? So, a weak system produces weak parties with weak leaders that untimately weakens the society. Now, ain’t that the truth?

Who is to be blamed? The current Malaysian Goverment is elected by the Malaysian people, one may claim that there are irregularity in the voting process, but with over 90% win in the parliment, I am sure those qualified voters(Indians included) played a significant role in contributing to the 90% win by BN(led by UMNO). BN got only less than 65% of the votes, but they secured 90% of the seat in parliment. If the people (Malays, Chinese, Indians and not to forget our fellow Malaysian in Sabah and Sarawak) are united, anticipating a 50:50 election result can be a reality. Cast your vote wisely !

  12. 12 swastika 04 Nov 23rd, 2007 at 11:12 pm

if malaysian goverment give disteping for this gatering, something difrent will happen..mind it !!! plz dont make every indians angry.

  13. 13 ConcernForChange Nov 24th, 2007 at 11:32 pm

I can see what hindraf is trying to tell. But they forget to understand fundamental issues. You must be given the basics to perform. Chinese from beginning had a different view rather than Indian who landed in Malaysia. Your basic education should be equal…Indians are smart..you give then the oppurtunity first..not for half boils but the real one. No to your family member but to every deserve Indian, then you see the difference(s).
Ask yourself, are we equal chance in our education? Are we given biz oppotunity by giving license? Can any Indian student(s) get a 1st Honour despite the are very smart? Please get down to fundamentals. Don’t see the issue(s) from your point of view. We all are directly or indirectly affected by the marginalization issue.
I encounrage very Indian in this country, think, think, think because we are lacking that, and to implement(s) any new things to improve our life. We should be united not only with our kind but also with other races. Who said the Malays or Chinese in general is not giving any oppurtunities? You must be good and excel. Hard work and great thinking is needed. Wake up my brothers.
Solution don’t come us, if we manage to stop Goverment from breaking up temples. The real solution is inside you. Ask youself, what am I doing other than my routine!
Yes, I agree the basics are not given to our merits but we can make the change. Stop waiting for goverment to feed you, make the change from you and your immediate family.

Indian parents are making the mistakes. Stop you astro, throw the TV away and then see the changes.

    Fellow Indian

Indians were born in Malaysia but are
treated as second- or third- class
    citizens by the government controlled
    by ethnic Malays.
look at wat happened yesterday during the Hindraf protest….
    All d indians have come
from far and near to gather peacefully
    but we’re being treated like
    criminals. No one there was
carrying any weapons so why are the
    police being this violent against
    us???
    The
government was using the riot police
    to attack the peaceful
march. We’re going along the way
    of India’s Mahatma Gandhi… in a peace
march for equal rights. There is
still a lot more to be done for the
Indians and we’ll continue with our
    struggle.
Wat rights do u think dat v have in malaysia now?
    After 50
years, what freedom do we have.
the gathering would have remained calm if
the police had allowed a group of
people to submit the signatures to the
    British high commission…
    But
    police provoked public violence and
people began retaliating to the water
    cannon and tear gas.
    “I saw
police catch a man and cover his head
before beating him in full view of the
    public. It was shocking.”

watever it is… v’ll still continue with our protestion…n continue 2 fight 4 our rights!!

TO , TUAH67 AND NONSENSE………………………………… I have gone through your messaage. You are really a culprit. This message is only for you.Actually we are not against our brotherwood Malays. We just asking our rights thats all.You culprit tuah67,don’t manuplate this insident for your own gain.We respect the malays highly because the language they are using is 75 percent is Tamil and Sanscrit. And they are Hindu formly before they became a muslim. In that manner we accept and respect them as our elderly brother. The history can tell you the truth. We too love Islam and Malays. We know that they also love Indian. For your understanding there are so many Malays take part in 25th humble gathering at KL.

  24. 24 Commonsense Nov 28th, 2007 at 6:50 am

While it was good a step for the Malays to be given privileges to catch up with other races, it appears after 50 years of social engineering, there appears to be no end in sight for this human greediness. In fact, it appears to be gathering momentum that the government forces could go about freely demolishing Hindu temples and intimidating people of other religious beliefs and yet not held accountable.
The world is watching this fast becoming “Pariah” nation. The world community should take note of this Racial/ Religious discrimination and exclude Malaysia from Trade agreements untill true democracy is restored and equal opportunities given to all races irrespective of race, colour or creed.

  25. 25 third class indian Nov 28th, 2007 at 8:42 am

hello tuah 67 . Do you know what is the meaning of marginalized. Every indian has been marginalized. Why did the Govt destroy our temple in Kg Jawa? Why the didnt break the Datuk Zakaria s mansion. For goodness gracious dont you wonder where is the hell an assemblymen got all those money to built a mansion worth * million ringgit. Can Indians get 5% discount when they buy a house. Can Indians get into 100% funded MARA college? Can Indians open a petrol station without giving 51% ownership to BumiPutra? Can Indian become a Prime Minister? Can Indian go to Local University without the qouta system and now you call meritrocracy? what word is that only in Malaysia such word has been used. Why dont they use and practice equal rights? Our Malaysian has the tendency to see other countries fr their flaws. I still remember our ex PM cried because the Bosnian children didnt get any education. Have you ever seen a Tamil school in a rural town. Its like a cow shed. Indians are the only race who supported the BN 98% but what do we get nothing but we still acheived middle class without any subsidy. Bravo to all Indians. Remember the election in Lunas. We supported BN . When Khairy and his goons protested against condoleeza Rice to hand over the memo did he apply for the permit ????? They were protected by or police. Where was the tear gas,FRU,water canon ?

  28. 28 HinduTamil Dec 3rd, 2007 at 6:07 am

Can Indians open a petrol station without giving 51% ownership to BumiPutra?

Yes they do. There are many 100% non-malay petrol station in the country.

Can Indian become a Prime Minister?
No they cant. Only Malaysian can.

Can Indian go to Local University without the qouta system and now you call meritrocracy?
Yes they do – as long as you are qualified!

    Dear populations,

Everyone living on earth is only temporarily. The earth belongs to everyone of us even though we are bound by the countries that we came from. So citizens of the world, when we die, we don’t bring any of the things that we acumulated over the years except one thing. The deed. When we die, people remember the deeds that you have done when u’re alive. Everthing else will be forgotten. So stop thinking that any one race is superior than the other and treat everyone the same.

  31. 31 Benedict Ravin Dec 7th, 2007 at 10:47 pm

Since the issues of marginlization has blown up so much and the Malaysian government has played a deaf ears, it time for the Prime minister, deputy prime minister and MIC president to step down if they are not able to sit down and resolve the issues. Clearly, there wasn’t such a problems during Mahathir’s leadership.

  32. 32 Benedict Ravin Dec 7th, 2007 at 11:00 pm

All the Chinese and Indian should move out of Malaysia and then let the world to see how the country will survive.

  33. 33 Benedict Ravin Dec 7th, 2007 at 11:22 pm

Mr Lee Kuan yiew of Singapore has also recently commented on the issue of Malaysian chinese being marginalized in Malaysia too and had caused a lot of hoo har..! Chinese and Indians, do think carefully when you cast your votes the next time. If getting angry is what UMNO can do to help, it only shows how incapable their leaders are in resolving national issues. A true leader must be able to manage any situation calmly and must provide immediate solutions to the issues. That is why the people choose them to be their leaders. Having said that, the Malaysia goverment is already 100 years behind Singapore’s excellant equal policy rights for everyone. Maybe if Malaysia were to adopt SIngapore’s policy, then the Chinese and Indians will be 100 years ahead of the majority populations. Malaysia should start to appoint those highly educated and intellectuals to run its country and not those school drop-outs.

  36. 36 fairness Jul 23rd, 2008 at 8:48 pm

The main problem in Malaysia today is the social contract. This is really meaningless as almost all non-Malays today are in their fourth generation born here and yet still have to abide to a social contract that was signed by their great grandfathers who they never even knew.
There are immigrants all over the world but Malaysia is the only country in the world that practises so called social contact to divide its’ citizens and deny certain groups from having equal rights.
The only party who can understand this simple logic and create a fair
play is the Malays themselves. I would like to ask the Malay how would they feel if being born 4th generation in Malaysia and still denied equal rights. Is this fair ? It is like a curse for the entire generations down the road. It sounds like reverse apartheid in somesense that is to deny a human being equal rights just beacuse of the color of his skin or religion differences. Any sensible person can tell that this is grossly unfair.
