Memorandum to Suhakam on Abuse, Misuse of Police Powers

The organizing committee of the program entitled, “United for Water: Religions Speak on the Right to Water”, will be handing a memorandum to Dato’ Siva Subramaniam of Suhakam in complaint against the police for not granting a permit to hold its event in Masjid Negara last Saturday on August 4, 2007.

Religious organizations, resident’s associations, civil society groups, unions and non-governmental organizations’ collective efforts to bring together various religious groups to discuss and deliberate religious perspectives on the right to water were dashed when the police permit was disallowed. This program was originally planned to take place at Masjid Negara but had to be changed at the very last minute. It was to be a symbolic meeting that would be a first ever in the history of the country.

Representatives from the organizing committee will present the memorandum tomorrow at SURUHANJAYA HAK ASASI MANUSIA MALAYSIA, 29th floor, Menara Tun Razak, Jalan Raja Laut, 50350 Kuala Lumpur, 11:30am
