Recently, Home Affair Ministry announced that a new bill for RELA - the volunteer corps will be tabled in parliament by this year, the ministry has proposed to strengthen RELA by setting up a new department to facilitate its operations and raids against illegal immigrants. Civil Rights Committee of KLSCAH concerns this approach due to past notorious track records of RELA on nabbing illegal immigrants, where serious human rights abuse cases were lodged by local rights groups.
Hence, we wish to hold these programs to collect public opinions on this issue, propose people’s bill before ministry draft it. Subsequent action will be organize a trip to submit the new bill to parliament and the ministry.
Objective : Government withdraws the idea of strengthening RELA, restores initial role of RELA
(1) ‘Do you agree to strengthen RELA?’ Public hearing
Date : 8 Aug 2007 (Wed, temporary fixed, depends on venue availability in KLSCAH)
Time : 8:00 pm - 10pm

Program flow :
- Welcome public folks speak out their mind on RELA, whether favor RELA or not, totally 8-10 candidates, we will arrange 5-6 refugee / migrant worker / local residents whom had ever harassed by RELA to voice out their real experience.
- Invite Director of RELA, Zaiton or his representative to response.
- Engage National Young Lawyer Committee of Bar council to attend and note the hearing, request them to study and draft new bill base on public folks opinions (planned but not yet contact) in two weeks time.
(2) RELA new bill lobby trip
a) Invite all concerned NGOs to participate this lobby trip
b) Make appointment with particular MP, human rights caucus and home affair ministry
c) Cum ‘how to do parliament lobby’ exposure trip, invite interested youth to go parliament together, learn how to do lobby in parliament.
