MAN CLAIMS POLICE STONED HIS SON (MALAY MAIL 28.5.2007 PG 12): CHARGE THESE POLICEMAN FOR ATTEMPTED MURDER.

We refer to the above newsreport and wish to once again express the people’s concern at this very serious alleged abuse of police powers which led to a man presumed innocent until proven guilty to be lying in a coma in the intensive care unit and possibly his death bed.

Professionally trained policemen throwing stones to apprehend a suspected motorcycle racer (Mat Rempit) is totally unacceptable, especially after 50 years of independence and a up to 42% pay rise. This is not the first time as previously a motorcyclist had been hit with a stick and was killed when he tried to avoid a police roadblock, but the perpetrators were never charged for murder.

To the contrary, in the Indian national Ganesh’s case in Penang, the employers were arrested and within 14 days were swiftly charged for negligently causing the death. Similarly, in the Muar robbery case where a policeman was shot dead by robbers the then Deputy IGP went down to the ground and within three (3) days the suspects were arrested and prosecuted within 14 days. The most recent: “Bikers face the music “Mat Rempit to be charged with attempted murder (of policeman)” The Star 3.4.2007! Why the double standards?

To the contrary, in this instance yesterday, which involves a mere civilian, the Penang police chief’s meagre response is “if it’s proven that the police were involved we will not hesitate to take action”.

We have no confidence in the police investigating their own crime and call for the urgent implementation of the Independent Police Complaints and Misconduct Commission (IPCMC) (which is in its third year of being overdue), with independent investigative and prosecution powers and unlimited funding.

Your kind indulgence in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

We apologise for any inconvenience incurred and mean no disrespect to your goodself. We are merely bringing this matter to your attention in the general public interest.

Thank You.
