Young Voters’ Campaign (Be the Committee!!!)

Young Voters’ Campaign 2007

Why we want to run this campaign?

Based on statistics compiled by the Election Commission (EC), some 70 per cent of the 4.9 million Malaysians yet to register as voters are aged between 21 and 35 years. Further, as of December 2006, some 15.2 million Malaysians had attained the age of 21 but only 10.3 million registered as voters.

This is alarming evidence of the current lack of political participation amongst young Malaysians today. There is therefore an urgent and immediate need to ensure young Malaysians are given adequate exposure and education on the election, current issues and the important role they play. Equally or more pressing is the need to get young Malaysians to register as voters, an exercise necessary for Malaysia to truly reflect the representative democracy it prides itself on.

KL & Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (KLSCAH)-Civil Rights Committee (CRC) and Youth For Change (Y4C), together with other joint partner organizations, are initiating a Young Voters’ Campaign themed “Empowering Youth for Political Participation 2007”.

What we want to achieve?

Our objectives are as follows:

1. Voter Education Roadshow

• To ensure that young Malaysians gain adequate awareness of the electoral system, electoral processes, voters’ options and rights, and all issues related to the Malaysian election system.
• Increasing young Malaysians’ knowledge and interest in current national issues.

2. Voter Registration

• To encourage young Malaysians who are residing in the Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur and Selangor) to vote and become active in the civic and political arena, contributing to making Malaysia a better and stronger nation.
• The joint organizers target at least 10,000 young Malaysians to be registered to vote by the 1st of August 2007 .

Who is our target groups?

• Young Malaysians between the ages of 21 and 39, also those who are qualified but has not yet registered as a voter.
• The campaign will focus upon the Klang Valley (Kuala Lumpur and Selangor only). Based on statistics from the Election Commission (EC), Selangor tops the list with the most number of unregistered voters at 600,000, while Kuala Lumpur has a total of 300,000 unregistered voters.
