Y4C regrets that the Internal Security Ministry confiscated ‘May 13: Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969′.
It is the responsibility of the government to allow searches for the truth of historical events rather than cracking down on the voices of the people. The Government should establish a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to allow the true facts regarding the May 13 incident to be made public. More importantly, all Malaysians should no longer live under the shadow of May 13, and the Commission will assist in this process.
Y4C welcomes Dr Kua Kia Soong’s book titled ‘May 13: Declassified Documents on the Malaysian Riots of 1969′. It provides a channel for our peoples to genuinely investigate the matters surrounding May 13 in the interests of nation-building and democratic discussion. It also serves as an important reference point for academic research.
Dr. Kua is an intellectual who has shown his social responsibility and courage to make Malaysia a better place to live in.
Y4C further states its disappointment with the three senators who requested the Government to ban the book and to take action on Dr. Kua. As senators, they should welcome free discussion on a variety of issues affecting our country with an open mind and positive attitude.
Malaysia is celebrating the 50th of Independence this year. Malaysians are sufficiently mature to discuss the 38-year “May 13 riots” incident. It is truly time that May 13 be dissected to help ethnic communities understand the truth of history, learn from the past experiences, set aside mis-perceptions and prejudices to forge a Malaysian Malaysia.
