What about the possibility of pulling out of Iraq, letting Iran invade and lose resources fighting their own kind,
and then come in and mop up the dregs?

I read this book recently. Found it very interesting because many of the incidents mirrored my own campus experience in the early 1990s. In terms of writing, the book was smooth and very energetic. But did find the typesetting (and at times the editing) to be bad. Was this a rush job? I don’t know. Anyway, the other element that was missing was macro treatment of some of the core issues mentioned in the book. For example, while the tension between SMC and JKMI was mentioned, it was not elaborated. The author didn’t elaborate more on the crux of the problem that they had with SMC.Also, am quite interested to know how JKMI managed their funds if fund-raising was not allowed/encouraged?

But beyond that, I was in awe of the passion that the strong cadre of workers that sustained the various groups that evolved in UKM during those days. Kudos to Arul for keeping the passion going despite the vagaries of post-campus life. Also, the idealism that emanates throughout the book is breath of fresh air, though unfortunately I do not quite agree with the kind of socialism that is (was?) espoused by members of JKMI. The class struggle theoretical framework in addressing socioeconomic problems have been found wanting….and if I may say even counter-revolutionary. But on the whole I enjoyed reading the book and was worth every ringgit that i had spent on it (I don’t usually buy new books).

Now I hope Arul will write another book detailing his post-campus career. Go for it…we need more people like you out there.
