Dear friends,
Following the take over of Nanyang Press Group by MCA 5 years ago and now reselling to the owner of Sin Chew Jit Poh, Suaram has been asked by a group of young people from the Writers Alliance for Media Independence (WAMI), Youth wing of the Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall (SCAHY), Malaysia Democratic Student and Youth Movement (DEMA) and Youth for Change (Y4C) to call a meeting of NGOs to support their initiative to campaign specifically against political interference in media and monopoly of media in the Chinese newspapers industry, and more generally, on the review of all laws that restrict media freedom.
The groups are now seeking a meeting with MCA on 1 December to press for MCA to sell off all its stake in the Nanyang Press Group and to push for the abolition of licensing of media in the Printing Presses and Publication Act with the setting up of a parliamentary select committee to review all laws that impacted press freedom negatively.
Therefore, Suaram is calling a meeting on:
Date: 27 November 2006 (Monday)
Time: 8.00pm
Venue: Suaram office, 433A, Jalan 5/46, Petaling Jaya.
We hope your organization will send representative to attend the meeting and support their action on December 1st in front of the MCA building.
Please find below the statement by the groups.
in solidarity,
Yap
Suaram
