Urgent Appeal: 9 activists arrested for defending housing rights in Kg. Berembang
Joining forces with the local authority, Majlis Perbandaran Ampang Jaya (MPAJ), the police arrested 9 activists who were trying to save the homes of the poor in Kampung Berembang this morning. They have been sent to the Ulu Kelang Taman Keramat police station and Ampang Jaya Police Station respectively. The nine are:
1. Adli Abdul Rahman
2. Fiqtriey bin Al Hakimi
3. Lee Huat Seng
4. Lechumy Devi Doraisamy
5. Mohd. Rajis
6. Parames Elumalai
7. Ramachanthiran Ananthan
8. Ramalingam Thirumalai
9. Thevarajan Ramasamy (frequent contributor to bangkit.net)
Suaram condemns the unnecessary arrest of the activists by the police. As the court case is still on going, the MPAJ and the police should not take sides because their duty is not to serve the developer in demolishing houses. This is clearly an abuse of power.
We call on the police to immediately release all the arrested activists.
Background
Kampung Berembang is located in Jalan Ampang (near the Gleneagles Hospital). 50 families who stayed in the kampong for more than 30 years are facing threat of forced eviction under the Selangor’s policy of “Zero Squattersâ€. The settlers were served with the Emergency Ordinance. They were given eviction notice even before their alternative homes were completed.
Just few days ago, the Shah Alam High Court has postponed their case to April 2007. Why cannot the MPAJ just wait until the court process is over or wait until they can move directly to their new homes. It is only 5 months away.

I just happened to browse through the links and found this blog. Well, I thought I’d like to share some inputs.
Some 30 or 40 years ago, the Government awarded a group of senior civil servants plots of land at or around the Kampung Berembang area for them to build residential homes as a reward for their dedicated services throughout their working life.
Some 100 or so recipients were involved, many dead over the passing years. At least 32 of them were issued Qualifying Titles and the matter just fizzled out as more of them died over time. Their next of kins faced brick walls everytime the issue is raised.
May I ask who actually owns land in that area?
My late father was one of those awarded about 5000 sq ft in those days and told his children (me included) to follow up on the matter before he died , but many documents went missing in the process. I still have some valuable documents pertaining to the matter and intend to pursue my inheritence. None of us have given permission neither expressed or implied for any party to squat on our piece of land.
Can anyone in here help me out? Many thanks.
